Market Update: 4 August 2026

Australian shares had a strong week, with the ASX 200 rising 2.3% as softer-than-expected inflation strengthened expectations that the Reserve Bank may keep interest rates on hold in August. Gains were broad across the market, led by technology, healthcare and consumer-focused companies, while improved global sentiment and a rebound in AI-related stocks provided further support. Corporate activity also remained healthy, with several Australian companies raising capital to fund growth projects and acquisitions.
US markets also moved higher despite ongoing uncertainty around interest rates and inflation. The Nasdaq led the gains, supported by renewed strength in technology stocks, while resilient consumer spending and business investment helped lift confidence in the broader economy.
European shares reached fresh record highs as company earnings remained solid and investors continued to support businesses linked to AI infrastructure and software. Although inflation remains a focus, the region’s markets showed encouraging momentum and continued resilience.
Asian markets delivered a mixed but active week. Japanese shares were relatively steady, while China and Hong Kong saw investors rotate into value, dividend and consumer-focused companies. Hong Kong performed particularly well, supported by strength in internet and consumer stocks, offering a positive end to the week across the region.
