Market Update: 3 November 2026

Australia’s share market had a positive week, with the ASX 200 rising 1.3%. Gains across resources, property and bank stocks helped lift the market, more than making up for a sharp decline in consumer shares. This came despite September inflation figures coming in higher than expected, with Australian shares taking their lead from a stronger performance on Wall Street. The latest inflation data also keeps the outlook for interest rates in focus, as households continue to face pressure from rising living costs.
In the US, technology stocks came under pressure as investors became more cautious, triggering a broader sell-off in the sector. This prompted investors to move towards the relative safety of government bonds, pushing 10-year bond yields lower across several developed markets. Meanwhile, US household inflation expectations edged up to 4.7% over the next 12 months, suggesting concerns about the cost of living remain firmly in place.
Across Europe, consumers also expect prices to keep rising, with eurozone inflation expectations reaching 3.1% over the coming year. This adds to the challenge facing central banks as they work to bring inflation under control without putting too much pressure on economic growth. In Japan, demand for government bonds was particularly strong, with a 20-year bond auction attracting record interest as investors sought safer places to put their money. In China, markets remained part of a mixed global picture as investors weighed broader economic conditions and shifting investor confidence.
Overall, the week highlighted the ongoing balancing act for financial markets: investors are keeping a close eye on inflation and interest rates while responding to changes in sentiment across major economies. While Australian shares managed to post a solid gain, global technology weakness and persistent inflation concerns show that uncertainty remains an important part of the investment landscape.
