Market update: 24 March 2026

Australian markets saw a softer week, with the ASX 200 easing 2.2% as rising global energy prices and fuel security concerns weighed on sentiment. Australia’s reliance on imported fuel has brought renewed focus to resilience and efficiency, while the Reserve Bank of Australia took a proactive step by lifting rates to stay ahead of inflation pressures. While these moves may feel challenging in the short term, they reflect a commitment to long-term stability, and there are encouraging signs that businesses and households are adapting, with practical shifts like increased efficiency and smarter energy use gaining momentum.
In the United States, markets pulled back as geopolitical tensions in the Middle East pushed oil prices higher and created uncertainty around interest rates. The Federal Reserve held rates steady but signalled patience on future cuts as inflation remains a key focus. Despite market volatility, underlying economic activity continues to show resilience, with business investment, particularly in areas like AI, helping support growth and highlighting pockets of strength across the economy.
European markets also experienced declines as higher energy costs added pressure to the region’s growth outlook. The European Central Bank maintained its current policy stance while acknowledging that energy-driven inflation may persist in the near term. Even so, inflation remains relatively contained, and policymakers are taking measured steps to balance growth and stability, which should help support a more sustainable recovery over time.
Across Asia, markets were mixed but generally weaker, with Japan and China both facing headwinds from rising energy prices and global uncertainty. Policymakers in Japan are working to cushion the impact through strategic reserves, while China continues to navigate a gradual recovery alongside evolving trade dynamics. While challenges remain, ongoing policy support and regional adaptability continue to provide a foundation for improvement as conditions stabilise.
