Market update: 8 September 2026

08 September, 2026

Australian shares moved lower this week, with the ASX 200 falling around 0.9%. Rising oil prices and higher bond yields added to concerns about inflation, while Australia’s 10-year government bond yield reached levels last seen in 2011. The Australian economy grew 2.1% over the year to the June quarter, contributing to expectations that the RBA could raise interest rates.

In the US, markets were mixed, with the S&P 500 edging 0.1% higher, the Dow Jones falling 0.3% and the Nasdaq gaining 0.4%. Renewed tensions between the US and Iran pushed oil prices higher, while the US 10-year Treasury yield climbed to around 4.8% during the week. A stronger-than-expected August jobs report also increased expectations that the US Federal Reserve could raise interest rates sooner.

European shares were softer overall, with the Euro Stoxx 600 falling 0.8%, while the UK’s FTSE edged 0.1% higher. Japanese shares also had a weaker week, with the Nikkei falling 2.1%.

Chinese markets were mixed. The Shanghai Composite fell 0.6%, while Hong Kong’s Hang Seng gained 0.3%. Across global markets, higher oil prices and bond yields were key themes for investors, as attention remained firmly on inflation and the outlook for interest rates.
