Market Update: 6 October 2026

06 October, 2026

Australian shares managed to finish the week slightly higher, with the ASX 200 gaining 0.2% despite some sharp swings along the way. IT, retail and telecommunications shares helped offset weakness in resources and banks. The RBA also lifted the cash rate to a 15-year high of 4.6%, as expected, maintaining its focus on keeping inflation under control. While higher rates continue to create challenges, the market’s positive finish after a volatile week showed some resilience.

In the United States, capital markets remained active, with around US$4.6 billion raised across six equity and equity-linked offerings.

Bond markets were also in focus, with longer-term government bond yields reaching multi-decade highs before easing later in the week. Higher borrowing costs weighed on some areas of global share markets, particularly those that are more sensitive to interest rates. The retreat in yields later in the week provided some welcome relief as investors continued to assess the outlook for inflation and interest rates.

Oil prices added to the volatility, with Brent crude climbing above US$108 a barrel as uncertainty around US-Iran negotiations increased. Encouragingly, prices eased later in the week as oil flows through the Strait of Hormuz improved, helping reduce some of the immediate pressure on inflation expectations. Overall, markets continue to navigate uncertainty, but the resilience seen across parts of the share market provides some positive signs for long-term investors.
