Market update: 22 September 2026

22 September, 2026

Australian shares had another softer week, with the ASX 200 declining for a third consecutive week as investors considered the outlook for inflation and interest rates. RBA Governor Michele Bullock noted that some upside risks to inflation were already emerging, keeping monetary policy firmly in focus. Despite the broader market weakness, Australian capital markets remained active, with Minerals 260 raising A$250 million to support development of its Bullabulling Gold Project in Western Australia.

In the United States, markets navigated another eventful week as the Federal Reserve raised interest rates by 0.25 percentage points and signalled that another increase may be needed as demand remains resilient and inflation stays above target. Energy prices also drove market movements, with oil jumping early in the week following attacks on Saudi pipeline infrastructure before easing as reports suggested the damage was less severe than initially feared.

Global capital markets remained active despite the uncertain backdrop, with around US$4.9 billion raised across major equity transactions during the week. Technology companies accounted for some of the largest deals, including sizeable convertible offerings from Delta Electronics International and Axon, while activity also extended across consumer, healthcare, natural resources and industrial businesses.

Overall, markets continue to balance higher interest rates, inflation and geopolitical uncertainty against signs of resilient economic and corporate activity. Short-term volatility may remain part of the picture, but ongoing investment and capital raising across Australia and global markets highlight that businesses continue to look ahead and invest in future growth.
