Market Update: 14 October 2026

Australian shares finished the week slightly higher, with the ASX 200 gaining 0.4% as positive performances in healthcare, utilities and real estate helped offset weakness in technology stocks. Despite ongoing uncertainty around inflation and interest rates, the market’s steady performance highlighted resilience across several sectors, providing an encouraging finish to the week.
In the United States, share markets experienced some ups and downs as rising tensions in the Middle East pushed oil prices above US$105 a barrel, renewing concerns about inflation. Markets briefly pulled back from record highs before recovering to finish broadly unchanged. Meanwhile, US government bond yields remained elevated, and continued strength in the labour market reinforced expectations that interest rates could stay higher for longer.
Central banks remained focused on managing inflation, with the US Federal Reserve signalling that another interest rate increase could be on the horizon before the end of the year. The European Central Bank also expressed caution, particularly around the potential impact of higher energy prices on inflation. While these challenges remain, policymakers continue to monitor economic conditions closely as they work towards longer-term price stability.
Across Asia, technology and semiconductor shares experienced a volatile week, particularly in Japan and China, as investors reassessed valuations and growth expectations surrounding artificial intelligence. Early gains in AI-related stocks eased later in the week, reflecting a more cautious approach to the sector. Despite these fluctuations, AI remains an important area of innovation and investment, with its long-term growth potential continuing to attract global attention.
