This week the Federal Government
\nannounced a\u00a0$1bn\u00a0<\/b>package to help support innovation in
\nAustralia. Over 20 ideas designed to support entrepreneurship, ideas,
\ninvestments and startups have been released, and as a startup, Raiz welcomes
\nthis with open arms. We wanted to let you know a little more about the package
\nand why it\u2019s important for Australia.<\/span><\/p>\n

Where did it all begin?<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

It seems to have started in
\nSeptember; from Malcolm Turnbull\u2019s very first speeches as Prime Minister he
\ntalked about an Australia that needed to be\u00a0\u201cagile, innovative, and
\ncreative\u201d<\/i><\/b>, an Australia that needed to recognise\u00a0\u201cdisruption
\nas our friend\u201d<\/i><\/b>.<\/span><\/p>\n

This was promising, but I think
\nwe can all be forgiven if we didn\u2019t believe every word coming out of a
\npolitician\u2019s mouth\u2026 so we waited to see whether any real actions would be
\ntaken.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Why is it important?<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

It is important because until now
\nAustralia has been lagging behind. For a country with so many bright and
\ntalented individuals, we don\u2019t have the culture of innovation to encourage them
\ninto entrepreneurship. The best talent is frequently being lured away to places
\nlike San Francisco, Singapore, and London. Australia needed a change so that we
\ncould become a nation of innovators, and encourage Australians to start their
\nbusiness journey here. The opening of Fintech Hub, Stone & Chalk, in Sydney
\nthis August, was also a welcome sign of change. Stone & Chalk houses over
\n40 different startups.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

What\u2019s in the $1bn package?<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

We won\u2019t go through all 20 ideas
\nin the package (we\u2019d encourage you to do some of your own reading if you have
\ntime), but here are some of our highlights:<\/span><\/p>\n

*\u00a0Women in Tech<\/b>: It\u2019s
\na simple one, for too long we\u2019ve been complaining about the lack of women in
\nthe tech industry. This package puts a handy $13m towards encouraging and
\nsupporting women to run with their ideas, and start a company.<\/span><\/p>\n

*\u00a0Tax incentives for
\ninvestors:<\/b>\u00a0Tax may be boring, but it\u2019s important. A major problem in
\nAustralian entrepreneurship is funding, and good people with great ideas not
\nbeing able to obtain funding. Tax incentives will encourage more investment in
\nstartups \u2013 meaning that more startups will be able to take the next step, and
\ngreat ideas won\u2019t need to be abandoned.<\/span><\/p>\n

*\u00a0Stop the boats
\n(leaving):<\/b>\u00a0You may not know this but we have been kicking smart people
\nout the country for a long time. With the new \u201centrepreneur visa\u201d, PhD
\ngraduates and other startup founders will be given the chance to stay and build
\ntheir company in Australia.<\/span><\/p>\n

Summary:<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

This won\u2019t turn Australia into
\nthe new home for innovation on its own, but it is a great start. The commitment
\nto innovation not only has the backing of the government, but also of the
\nopposition Labor party.<\/span><\/p>\n

Now what we need is you and all
\nother Australians to start running with your ideas and becoming a part of the
\nnew creative, disruptive Australia.<\/span><\/p>\n
