A: One bite at a time<\/b><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 9.0pt 0cm;\">It\u2019s<br \/>\na dad joke but a good one none the less, and it stems from a quote attributed<br \/>\nto Creighton Abrams: \u201cWhen eating an elephant, take one bit at a time\u201d.<br \/>\nNot only is this one of my favourite quotes, but it is one of the<br \/>\nunderlying philosophies of the financial advice that I give my clients.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 9.0pt 0cm;\"><i>\u201cIn<br \/>\nmy time in helping people hit their financial goals, one trend that stands out<br \/>\nis what I call the \u2018Back-Burner effect\u2019.\u201d<\/i><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 9.0pt 0cm;\">The<br \/>\nconversation that I had this week with a new client was typical of so many<br \/>\nconversations that I have had with my clients over the years. He had a<br \/>\nfinancial goal and we were discussing the best way to get there and how this<br \/>\ngoal should be prioritised against his other goals. \u00a0This was his biggest<br \/>\ngoal, and thankfully had the longest time frame attached but as my experience<br \/>\ntells me, this meant that this was the goal that he was least likely to<br \/>\nachieve.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 9.0pt 0cm;\"><i>\u201cLetting<br \/>\na big important goal sneak up on you is a Financial FAIL.\u201d<\/i><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 9.0pt 0cm;\">In<br \/>\nmy time in helping people hit their financial goals, one trend that stands out<br \/>\nis what I call the \u2018Back-Burner effect\u2019. \u00a0This is where the less immediate<br \/>\ngoals lose significance because they\u2019re off in the distance, and regardless of<br \/>\ntheir importance, they don\u2019t get the attention that the immediate<br \/>\n\u2018in-your-face\u2019 goals do so the result is that these big, important, long-term<br \/>\ngoals are neglected\u2026.
