While markets responded positively, underlying consumer data pointed to a more cautious outlook. Indicators such as job ads and vehicle sales suggest spending was already slowing before recent geopolitical events. At the same time, inflation pressures picked up, with higher fuel prices pushing the Melbourne Institute Inflation Gauge to 4.3% year on year, highlighting a more challenging near-term outlook for both policy and growth.

US markets also rallied, with the S&P 500 up 3.6%, the Dow rising 3.0% and the Nasdaq gaining 4.7% in a holiday shortened week. The gains followed news of a two-week ceasefire between the US and Iran, which helped ease concerns around further escalation and energy supply disruptions. Inflation data reflected the recent energy shock, with headline inflation rising to 3.3% year on year, driven by higher petrol prices, while core inflation remained more contained. Rising fuel costs weighed on consumer sentiment, and markets also noted broader cost pressures, including increases in natural gas and fertiliser prices.

European equities moved higher, with the STOXX Europe 600 up 3.1%, supported by improved sentiment following the ceasefire. However, rising energy costs continued to push inflation higher, with eurozone CPI reaching 2.5%. EU officials also warned that the conflict could weigh on economic growth through 2026, keeping some caution in the outlook.

Japan saw a strong rebound, with the Nikkei up 7.2% as reduced energy supply risks supported exporters and technology stocks. Despite the gains, rising producer prices and higher government bond yields kept expectations of a potential rate hike in focus.

Chinese markets also advanced, with the Shanghai Composite up 2.7% and the Hang Seng rising 3.1%. Stronger domestic data helped support sentiment, with producer prices turning positive for the first time in over three years. This points to rising cost pressures, particularly from higher energy prices.

Don’t have the Raiz App?

Download it for free in the App store or the Webapp below:

Click to download the Raiz app

Important Information

This blog has been issued by Instreet Investment Limited (ACN 128 813 016 AFSL 434776) as Responsible Entity of the Raiz Invest Australia Fund (ARSN 607 533 022) and has been prepared without taking into account your objectives, financial situation or needs.
