Seven of the eleven major sectors finished lower, led by Technology and Consumer Discretionary stocks. Investors continued to weigh the Reserve Bank’s cautious stance after Governor Bullock reiterated that the board remains patient on future rate cuts. Markets are currently pricing in about a 43% chance of a rate reduction at the November meeting, suggesting that traders still expect some support ahead, but not immediately.

Overseas, US markets pulled back as trade tensions and political uncertainty resurfaced. The S&P 500, Nasdaq and Dow Jones all fell more than 2% for the week, reversing earlier gains driven by enthusiasm for AI and corporate dealmaking — including a new partnership between Advanced Micro Devices and OpenAI. Sentiment turned sharply lower after President Trump floated the idea of significantly increasing tariffs on Chinese imports, while an ongoing US government shutdown, now in its tenth day, added to investor nerves and limited fresh economic data.

In Europe, shares also eased after recent record highs, with the Euro Stoxx 50 down 2.1%. Traders took profits as political unrest in France and the renewed trade tensions between major economies dampened risk appetite. Meanwhile, China’s markets delivered a mixed performance following the Golden Week holiday. The Shanghai Composite managed a small gain, but Hong Kong’s Hang Seng fell sharply amid disappointing spending data and news that Beijing will tighten its rare earth export controls — a move that could further strain relations with the US.

Japan was the standout, with the Nikkei jumping over 5% for the week. Investors reacted positively to Sane Takaichi’s victory in the Liberal Party’s presidential election, clearing the way for her to become Japan’s next prime minister. Optimism around potential political stability and continued economic stimulus helped lift local sentiment, offering a bright spot in an otherwise jittery global market.

Don’t have the Raiz App?

Download it for free in the App store or the Webapp below:

Click to download the Raiz app

Important Information

This information has been issued by Instreet Investment Limited (ACN 128 813 016 AFSL 434776) as Responsible Entity of the Raiz Invest Australia Fund (ARSN 607 533 022) and has been prepared without taking into account your objectives, financial situation or needs.
